plebbit
Plebbit is a decentralized protocol and tooling developed to create message boards, which includes popular platforms like Reddit, Discourse, 4chan, Facebook groups, and old-school forums. The protocol is purely peer-to-peer and does not rely on any central server, database, DNS, or public HTTP endpoint, making it highly resistant to censorship and more secure against attacks. Unlike traditional platforms that have a website or interface served by a central party, Plebbit does not have a website or interface accessible from a central party, similar to Uniswap. Each community, board, forum, or subreddit is treated as a torrent file that is updated every five minutes. This approach eliminates the need for transaction fees to post, and the protocol does not use a blockchain, reducing the risk of spam. Instead, community owners run a challenging service, such as captcha, over peer-to-peer pubsub to prevent spam. Peers that fail too many challenges are blocked from the pubsub.
